The soft, white sand which covers the floor of the shul is a commemoration of the secret means by which Jews in Inquisition-era Portugal and Spain were able to conduct their prayers. And today many Jewish visitors from North America are coming to Mikve Israel to celebrate bnai mitzvahs. This is part of a trend for destination “life cycle” events, such as weddings and bnai mitzvahs, which niche market travel operators, such as Curacao resorts, are catering to. The Caribbean generally – and Curacao in particular, have become popular destinations for Jews on holiday who are interested in exploring Jewish roots in the New World. Mikve Israel is a lovely place for bnai mitzvahs, with its white sand floor and maize-colored walls with sunlight streaming in through azure stained glass windows.
